No matter what you may feel about Valentines day, there has to be something said for day that is all about LOVE! Personally, it was always one of my favorite days!

The cards with their corny sayings...

The excitement of getting one from the cutest boy in the class.....

The excitement of seeing that same cute boy open the card I gave him...

Puppy love.....

The delicious chocolates from my Pop that my Mom would share with us...after she enjoyed the best ones!

If I give "him" a box of these hearts, will he just see it as candy or will he get the message??

I guess I have to face it...I'm a hopeless romantic.

Golden Globing it Hawaiian Style!

This past week island born Kaui Hart-Hemmings novel
"The Descendants"
which was made into a Fox movie, received the Golden Globe for
"best movie drama".

Finally, a locally born island artist has been recognized.

I say finally because as most everyone knows, for years the Hawaiian Islands have been host to numerous and many legendary Hollywood productions:

Classics such as James A. Micheners' "Hawaii"

Elvis Presley in "Blue Hawaii"

Stephen Spielbergs' "Jurassic Park"

Adam Sandlers' "50 First Dates"

Otto Premingers' "In Harms Way"

John McTiernens' "Predator"

.....and the list goes on....

While most Hawaii residents appreciate the positive impact these productions have on our island economy, providing jobs for hundreds of local people as well as the ripple effect the spending has on local businesses, there has always been an underlying desire or angst to go beyond just being the host backdrop, to actually writing and producing-using our local talent.

Considering the multitude of ethnic mixes and the challenging stories of their migration to Hawaii, it stands to reason that there would be incredible life experience inspiration that has the potential to produce some very unique story lines, much like "The Descendants".

Of course, I'm not lessening the impact that "Clooney sightings" had on the island population...especially the ladies!

Meet my new friend Joy!

She is a resident of Oregon and feels that the Pacific Northwest provides a quality of living environment that encourages and motivates her creative gift.

Joy is the mother of three strong boys, is an avid yogini and in enjoys growing flowers and vegetables in her homestead garden.

The art of painting on silk is more than a hobby or business for Joy, in her words "the stretching, painting, steaming, prepping, shipping and photography are creative activities that I center my home and life around". And it shows in the quality and beauty of her finished product!

Joy loves to paint outdoors (weather permitting) enjoying natures inspiration. Her style is based on seasonal trends and fashion influenced by her personal interpretation. Aside from her multitude of business responsibilities, Debbi is mom to three other children, still at home as well as a grandmother to an active three year old grandson and a "buddy" to her husband. In her words she is "having the time of her life!" Debbi says that running her shop on etsy is her business and the best part is that it allows her time with her family.

Debbi and Amanda (mom and daughter...isn't that just awesome?) create jewelry, fashion accessories, home decor and wedding products...but I have to admit that I just love, love their fiber arts! Hand crocheted and woven tams, scarves, flip-flops, boas and more. All consisting of quality choices of fiber as well as wonderfully rich color schemes.

Amanda has a degree in graphic arts and is responsible for the banner, avatars and graphic elements of their etsy shop. I have had the privilege of developing a friendship with Debbi over the past year and I just wish I could tell you half of the incredible adventures of her life in North Carolina. However, I'll let her creations speak as they reflect her playful and very creative spirit!

Farewell Princess Leah!

Leah is the last of the kittens that we had to adopt out.

She is a hoot and we are going to miss her...but it is all good and we are grateful for kitty loving people who are willing to adopt!

Agnes has a full time day job, is a wife, mom and grandmother to seven boys!
Making jewelry started as a hobby and a way to relax after a long day at work. However at her co-workers and friends (her best customers) persuading, her hobby, to our benefit, slowly turned into a business!

As much as Agnes loves her job, she looks forward to the day when she can retire and create her jewelry on a full time basis.

Country Roads~Take Me Home....

Seven years ago, I left the island of Oahu to relocate to the Big Island or the Island of Hawaii. I have 5 grand kids on one island and 5 grand kids on the other. This holiday season, I was blessed to be able to spend 10 days with the 5 grandchildren on Oahu, in the town that I was raised, Kaneohe.

To keep in shape during the holidays, I did a lot of walking while visiting. On New Years eve (day) two of my older grand kids and I took a four mile walk to one of my favorite childhood haunts, Heeia Kea Pier. The walk is so scenic, that you don't even think about the exercise you are getting...

A great shot of the majestic Ko'olau Mountains that my 11 year old grand daughter captured...btw, she told me on this visit that photography is something she is considering as a future...love it!

The tide was low and the bay glassy when we first got there. In the background is the famed hat shaped island "Chinaman's Hat". Numerous stories and pieces of art have been created over the years with this island as its' subject.

As I walked behind my grandkids listening to them comment about the sea creatures, plants and coral, I could hear my own voice, so many years ago, echoing the same comments and reflecting the same awe of this beautiful little piece of island paradise.

The weather was beautiful that day, sunny with cool trades. It was so heart warming to see families, people of all ages and genders armed with fishing poles, enjoying a peaceful day together.

Other families or "ohana" took advantage of the beautiful and calm waters of Kaneohe Bay.

Even the family pet seemed to be totally enjoying himself!

A local pier isn't complete without their little general store and deli! In this case the menu includes awesome local delicacies such as seared ahi, tempura ulua, Hawaiian style beef stew and so much more! They even have a facebook page which you have to check out!

This pier has been around since right after WWII and there are so many remnants of days gone bye. Here a boat tie is pictured against a healthy coral patch in the bay.

Heeia Kea Pier is the home of the Kaneohe Canoe Club paddling team, a base for local and commercial fisherman, fishing tours as well as local water enthusiasts. However it is most known to visitors for their fantastic glass bottom boat tours. Here a group of Japanese visitors are being helped off of their tour. There was a lot of laughter and kind words to the local guides, so it was apparent that they all enjoyed the tour!

I think my grand kids and I will "play tourist" on my next visit and do one of these tours!

We had a wonderful Christmas and spent time with family and friends on the New Year, however, I believe this day was the hi light of my visit...nothing like country roads to take you back to the place that you belong!

Verse Is Not Written...It Is Bled!

I know, I know, you are going to say that it is way too early to be discussing Valentines Day!

For goodness sake, we didn't even get past the new year celebration!

I learned something about myself this year; it was probably always there, I just never really stopped to think about the effect that the red and white Christmas standard have on my thoughts about the soon coming celebration of LOVE!

I admit it, I am a true Romantic!

Talking about "man"..you know the middle part of "Ro-man-tic", they are such difficult creatures to shop for. Furthermore, who wants another bottle of Gio or another War Game...lol!

With that said, I have discovered the perfect, must have for that special guy in your life this Valentines Day.

What says masculinity and romance more than Leather and Paper!

Okay, you laugh, however maybe the absence of these basics in our fast paced, technology oriented world has reduced the romanticism of days long gone. A pen in hand and time to think can bring out the heart of any guy!

Shirley Lynne, artist, creator and curator of "The Orange Windmill" on etsy spends her creative moments cutting each piece of leather binding for these fantastic creations by hand. Even more, she hand tears each sheet of journal paper and hand binds them individually and permanently to the leather, for a unique hand-crafted, primitive look that will transport even the most modern man/person back to the days of individuality and creativity.

This all is not to say that the feminine has been forgotten, not for a moment! Shirley's journals and books come in a plethora of sizes, colors, designs and styles that will more than please all genders and orientations!

I am so excited...doing my happy hula!

I've been invited to participate in this second annual Open Studio Sale at the Hale Pali Art Studio

(hah lay pah lee which interprets to house on the mountainside or hill in Hawaiian)

befittingly as this studio is perched on a hillside overlooking a gorgeous Pacific Ocean isthmus and popular surfing spot known as Honoli'i.

Oh my gosh, so beautiful! The artists featured in this post are just a few of the creatives' that will be vending their hand made products, however as you take this mini-virtual-tour I am sure your appetite will be whetted and leaving you wanting for more!

About a year ago, I had the privilege of meeting and becoming friends with an incredible artist and creator Patricia Larsen-Goodin lamp curator of etsy shop Lava Lamp Work.

I have to confess that I did not know much...okay, I was clueless about lamp work or glass bead making until Patricia sparked my curiosity! I mean, where did I think these beads came from? Like they just fell from the sky or something?? So much love and intricate handwork goes into creating each one. They are kiln annealed for strength and durability. So if you are a "bling basher" like me

(not purposely) you can still enjoy the beauty of these wonderful hand made, unique, one of a kind creations!

The hula fish card at the top of this post is one of the many that will be available by Kawaihae Cards, who source and make these unique and high quality cards right here on the Big Island of Hawaii. They also welcome custom designs...now that's as close to making them yourself as one can get!

Again, they are just so cool!

Fish are like money to us Hawaiians, always a part of the culinary offerings at gatherings and events, given as gifts, bartered, you get the idea! You know that you are someone special when someone gifts you with part of their fresh catch, so how appropriate that they are the focal point on cards that will be used to communicate friendship, thanks, love.....

And then there is ME...Redemption Art

As I mentioned, I feel privileged to be included, as traditionally, vintage curators aren't considered for participation in art studio sales. I have worked long and hard to convince artists and galleries that I do deal in art and hand made...just not my art or hand made, but it is sustainable, upcycled, rescued..yes I've used all of the terms!

Again, thanks to Devany for being open minded and on the cutting edge and supporting my venue as THIS emerging artist (me) needs to eat while I learn to create, and hopefully someday will be able to feature my OWN art at an incredible venue such as this!

Well, I said a lot, it's obvious that I am EXCITED!

If you're not a professional writer, can you still get writers block? This may be a silly question, however it sure felt like I hit a wall this past week!

Maybe it's the hustle and bustle of the holidays. Maybe it's all of the doomsday reports that we are being inundated with by the media, or maybe it's what appears to be the relentless search for who it is we should blame for these challenges we are all facing!

So the Season Begins...in Barefeet!

It's been cold and rainy for the past three weeks here in Mountain View. Now I know that those of you who know about me are probably getting a giggle out of this, because you know I live in Hawaii. However, I do live at the 2000 foot level and can see the snow on Mauna Kea from my front yard, to top that off, we don't have insulation or heating in most of our homes in Hawaii, so when it is 55 degrees outside, it is 55 degrees inside!

Well, I must confess that I do have a wood burning fire place and we do use it, but the other facts are true!

This morning I walked out onto my front patio area, just like the Hawaiian person that I am...in my barefeet! I think Sophia was trying to tell me that its too cold to go without shoes!

Of course when "Mom" comes outside, the "posse" feels it necessary to greet me! Honey (dog) was cut off at the pass by Sister...if I was faster on the "draw" you would get a picture of Honey sticking her nose in a place that made sister run away...LOL! Well it works, what can I say?

Good old "Claws E. Moto" always wants a piece of the action, however at 17 years old, he takes it slow and easy and peeks out behind an Ohia Tree to make sure that Honey won't interfere!

You can see that one eye is going blind, but that is about it as far as his senior woes are involved, and that's not bad at all!

He's actually watching the Honey and Sister action...glad that Honey is not sticking her nose...or pushing his button...LOL!

I had actually just wandered out there to enjoy a relaxed cup of coffee

(Hawaiian Coffee..yeah!)

But, I never seem to just be able to relax, especially when I saw a grapevine wreath just begging to be adorned.

So the season begins at Connie's house, as the first decoration gets done.

How do you like my ti-leaf ribbon?

Pretty cool ha? Going Hawaiian green...LOL!

Layers of Hawaiian Life

One of the ways I "get my zen on" is to go beach combing.

I guess that makes sense being that I am from Hawaii, however there is so much more than to what meets the eye..like being the Travel Channels #1 beach to wear your skimpiest thong...lol!

There are treasures that hold the stories of days gone bye. Of great ocean liners that once perused our islands and were allowed to dump their trash out at sea, yes, maybe leaving behind some pollution

(which is why this is now outlawed) however, along with the bath water were the "babies" beautiful wine and aperitif bottles that were slowly formed into sea glass of all shapes, sizes and colors.

There are also remnants of not so good memories, like the devastating tsunamis that hit the island of Hawaii or the Big Island in the '40s and again in the '60s when shops, homes, cars, and boats were carried into Hilo Bay by the mammoth waves.

Today I can still find pieces of Japanese and Chinese pottery traditional of the kitchen ware of our local population.

The sea glass that I have used in this ring is Hawaiian as well as the small piece of celadon colored pottery that tops it. As I created this piece I felt inspired to layer my finds as a reminder of the "layers of island life" from primitive times to current that are slowly stirred and released, when the great ocean is ready.

a non-profit art focused organization located in Volcano, Hawaii

held their annual Christmas in the Country Member appreciation party this past Saturday at their Gallery located in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

"why so early, you ask?"

Well, one of the benefits is receiving a 20% discount off of any of the art for the evening...and if you live in Hawaii, shipping is always a concern. To insure that gifts being sent to the Continental US are received in time for Christmas, they should be shipped by Thanksgiving. And of course, international mail should have gone out at the latest a week ago!

The event was enjoyed by all, as important as promoting the art work, is the ability for members to take the time to get to know each other and to network, something we do well in Hawaii...the aloha spirit!

Those who wanted to shop were treated to some fantastic hand made art, there was definitely something for everyone!

These adorable handmade ornaments reflect the wonderful diversity of our people...and they are just plain cute!

This painting of a ukulele and pineapple are done on a piece of Koa wood, an indigenous wood...how gorgeous is the natural grain of the wood...

This fantastic large relief piece represents "Pele" the goddess of the volcano. She measures, from what I could tell, about 5 feet wide by 5 feet high, I would love to have a space that large to give her a home!

The Volcano Art Center also has a tradition of a Christmas Wreath contest display. There were over 30 wreaths on display, many just fantastic pieces of art made from all kinds of materials from sea shells to feathers, live flowers, gourd, ceramic and so much more...wish I could show you more!

There was a lot of yummy food (or ono (oh no) as we say in Hawaiian. This is a portion of the dessert table. Because in Hawaii food goes with EVERYTHING!!

The old fireplace kept us all nice and cozy and protected from the nippy Volcano weather. By the way, it was snowing on Mauna Kea that evening!

In Hawaii, believe it or not, you can experience every eco system!

Peeking in from the back porch...to the second champagne bar..I dubbed this the "Back Door Bar"...

Yes, it was a fun evening...maybe you will be there next year??

Re-Inventing the Holidays-Life After the Crash!

The holidays were actually getting a little too routine anyway!

Brightly decorated shopping malls, fancy Christmas parties, arms laden with shopping bags, a gem studded pedi and mani. I mean,really, after a while these holiday "traditions" can get old...NOT!

Okay, on second thought, maybe YES, just maybe it was time for me to look at my life and to change the routine, to prioritize, to stream line to become more environmentally aware. Now that it's been over three years, of "life after the economy", away from the lifestyle to which I was accustomed, the pain and fear are beginning to, honestly, be replaced with creativity and excitement. I know I always had it in me, this pioneering spirit, it just reveals itself in more "organic" ways now!

So, I have decided that this holiday season will be a hand made celebration!

And I have a goal of at least 90% handmade (100%) would be better, but I don't want to set myself up...yeah,still have that corporate mentality!

From wrapping paper to baked goods, up-cycled gift tags, a re-styled Christmas dress and vintage gifts, the ideas keep coming and the excitement keeps mounting. As I look around and start to get creative the ideas are endless.

For my first project I made gift tags out of my left over business cards.

How symbolic is that!

I took some vintage Hawaiian material that I "inherited" from my daughter....(daughter: I am cleaning up, throwing this c--p away! me: can I dig through your stuff first? Wow, what's wrong with this picture...LOL!)

I found the star stamp at good old Goodwill, an entire bag of sponge toys, brand new, for fifty cents!

Stars...Hearts....Squares....Circles

I cut a third of a second business card to make the front or face of the tag.

The string was some metallic elastic cord that I had in the back of my craft box forever.

I can't lie, this whole new lifestyle is taking some adjusting to, and I am grateful especially for my girlfriends, those near, far and virtual, for helping me to keep my eyes on the goal...not on the circumstances!

I wonder what my grand kids will have to say about these days and these new found values years from now!

The Day the Music Changed!

My mom was a Sophomore at the Kamehameha Schools, a private school, located in an area known as Alewa Heights, a community that overlooks most of Honolulu Harbor. She was one of the students that boarded there, due to the traveling distance, in those days, from the school to her rural home.

this is a photo of the aloha tower market place in current day Honolulu Harbor....

It was 7:20am on a Sunday morning and she and her classmates were in their "Sunday best" headed for Sunday morning Chapel services. Whenever relating this story, my mom would always start it with "As I was walking to chapel, I remember that my knee high stockings were slipping down over my knees, so I had stopped walking and was gently reaching down to hike them up..." She goes on to say how she heard what she thought was thunder, yet thought it odd, as the day was sunny and bright. These type of "out of no where" storms do happen in our islands from time to time, so it didn't seem odd enough to make her panic or run for cover. However in the next 20 minutes, life in our beautiful, remote islands changed for the people who live here, as well as for the rest of the world.

The date was December 7, 1941. My mother is 86 years old now, and can still tell you the story as if it were yesterday, I always wondered what it would have felt like to be in her shoes that fateful day...

Service men and women board the local buses side by side in down town Honolulu, this must be happy hour, and possibly a Friday afternoon...look at the destination!

Fast forward to 2011, October 29th to be exact, my Son and I sort of stumbled upon this incredible War Museum located in Waikiki, adjacent to the beautiful Hale Koa Hotel, an armed forces vacation retreat. I have to admit that I am a little embarrassed that I didn't even realize this "labor of love" existed, and have since vowed to tell as many people as I can about it!

Local Hawaiian children and adults being taught how to use regulation gas masks, it appears that this had become a part of every day life, based on the kids who were more curious about the camera person!

While the museum may not be "world class" in regards to its architectural features, as the building definitely resembles an old government style administration building, it is definitely world class when it comes to the love and care and passion in which the priceless displays and collections were assembled to tell the story of not just WWII, but of Hawaii's "warrior" history from primitive times (another post).

Life as usual in down town Honolulu...love the C.Yee Hop company truck, probably filled with his employees. The people are lined up at the Princess Theatre, once on of Honolulu's premier theatres, which of course has gone the way of the duplex theatres that we are accustomed to now.

These are "photos" of photos found in the museum, for this particular article I focused on WWII and "life as usual" in the then Territory of Hawaii. My photos don't do the museum justice, however I do have to say that I shed a few tears as I toured the halls and read the stories.

My Pop may have known these young soldiers, perhaps they were his "battle buddies" in Korea. I had to feature this photo...based on the number of Hawaii based soldiers that fought in Korea the government had special canned rations of "Lau Lau" and "Poi", which the soldiers are eating in traditional Hawaiian finger style. How is that? A little bit of trivia that I had never known. My son who is actively serving commented that he wished they had these local style rations today...LOL!

My grandmother told me that they "worked their way" through the sadness and fear, as the war brought a lot of employment opportunities for the people of Hawaii. She also told me about victory gardens and poker games by the light of a radio, as that was all they were allowed during black out!

Back to the Waikiki War Museum, these photos really concerned me, as they raise a very real and current and potentially dangerous issue. In the picture above it appears that the government held on going public training regarding the need to "Serve in Silence". At first I didn't understand what this was about, however the sign below says it all...

Island Hopping for the "TEAM"

Living on a chain of islands can be interesting to say the least! For one thing, most of us, locals, have family residing on more than one island!

This means a plane trip whenever we want to see each other or to attend "familial" types of events.

Seven and a half days ago, I threw some clothes in a military type backpack that belongs to my son (back pack, not clothes =) and jumped on a plane to spend the week with him my youngest son, whom just returned home from overseas after a year away.

He's in the Army!

Although he could have stayed at several different family homes, together we decided that Waikiki it would be!

He is so fortunate to have an awesome girl "buddy" who gets him a condo right smack dab in the middle of Waikiki whenever he is on leave,is that awesome or what?

Our days were pretty fun filled, however, one thing we liked doing was
"playing tourist"
enjoying the things that most locals just walk by on their "rush to work!"

However there are some "traditions" that are a part of being an inter-island or local visitor, like visiting historic "Dukes" on the beach at Waikiki for a meal and some "happy hour" entertainment and appetizers or "pupu" as we say in Hawaii!

I have so much more to tell and I will! (tell that is) blog post by blog post!

Feeling the Color of Red~Passion, Love, Sensitivity and Joy!

I am posting this feature from a Starbucks in Waikiki, while that may not seem unusual for a person who is from Hawaii, in my case it is a little out of the ordinary. You see, I normally call Volcano, located on the Big Island, my home.

However, this week my son is home on leave from being overseas for a year (he's a soldier)

and he wanted me to spend some time just chillin' with him in Waikiki, not too much to ask of a mom!

I was thinking that I have been feeling pretty "red" since I have been here with him.

Red in how it represents passion, love, sensitivity and joy!

So it just made absolute sense that I would take those "heart" feelings and translate them to this post featuring four team members of my

Life in Hawaii~Up Close and Personal

A few weeks ago I posted a facebook pictures of the week feature mainly in response to the "positive" change to the pictures format which I really appreciate!

I really liked the results and this week decided to post a "snapshots of life in Hawaii via facebook" feature.

Come along for the ride, its a nice one!

If I ever had to put a picture to the word Aloha, this would be it! Found this on my nieces facebook page reflecting the activities surrounding the

Maui Marathon.

By the way, she just started a new blog titled "Pretty Things Hawaii" it would be so nice~Aloha of you if you would visit her blog and send some encouragement her way. She is a single mom, working and getting her art degree at the same time!

This shot was titled "Brotherhood at Damien Memorial High School". Submitted by my friends whose son is in this photo. Named after the infamous Father Damien advocate and caregiver for the early Hawaiian leprosy victims, this private Catholic boys school continues to turn out some of Hawaii's finest!

What can I say? What is a day at the beach without harassing the crabs?

This is the son of yours truly..home on leave from Korea, soon to be stationed back in America..proud of this crazy guy!

I would title this picture "Island Women, the legacy continues!". This picture is taken from the wall of a woman who grew up with my daughter. Now they have kids of their own (three in the front on the left)...where has the time gone! I remember the mamas when they were younger than that!

As the World Shifts...What Role do We Play?

The other day I met a man, who was sitting in his moms bead shop, while she took a lunch break. As I looked around at her wonderful collection of beads and findings we got into a casual conversation. In the midst of that conversation, he said, rather aloof "I have never been this poor in my life", which of course took our conversation to a little deeper level. I mean after all, he was being candid, and obviously he felt comfortable enough to trust me, so at that point I knew there was a more meaningful reason as to why I wandered into his shop.

While I tell this story, I thought I would add some photos of my current life endeavors...for the visual effect, after all you can't see my hands

(that's a joke, I always talk with my hands!)

These are some simple beaded bracelets that include Hawaiian shells and are strung on stretchy mono filament, I have them listed in my hand made shop on etsy.

Since he was opening up to me, I felt it only appropriate to identify with where he is at and share a little about my situation...because, basically, we are in the same boat! Now, please know, I am grateful for all that I have...a roof over my head, an awesome family, great friends, I am blessed. But it has been tough going from a consistent and substantial income to

having to re-invent myself and constantly work forward on creating ways to produce an income.

This Asian inspired cocktail dress is one of the items I have listed in my vintage shop on etsy.

He told me about his life as an artist, creator and contractor in Southern California, and how over the past three years he had slowly been forced to liquidate his equipment in order to sustain himself and pay his mortgage.

I love gardening and have had some success at making little table top gardens, primarily using succulents. I sold a few at a local swap meet, a garage sale and one directly off of my display at a vintage sale a few weeks ago. So, I think I may be working at making more of these!

Basically, his last resort was to sell his home, pack up and move with his mom, here in Hawaii. Now that might not seem like a horrible alternative, however, when you are in your early 50s, have worked hard and been independent for most of your life, moving with your mom anywhere in the world can be tough!

I have always had an affinity for primitive art, especially as it relates to my Hawaiian ancestry. This piece is made of bone and incorporates a semi-precious stone and a Hawaiian sea shell.

One of my favorite vintage pieces in my etsy shop, copper pressed Polynesian woman, the frame (not in the photo) is wood carved to look like bamboo..sweet Hawaiian vintage.

Okay, back to my story. He told me that he has always loved to create, especially metal jewelry and coincidentally is influenced by primitive art as well. So he creates (I really wish I took a picture of one of his fantastic pieces) and as he creates he networks and seeks a venue for his work.

Pretty much like where I am at. I guess I am a little bit ahead as I have been charging forward in the virtual universe and have come to terms with the fact that this is the way it is today! He said that he needs to get there, I sensed a little bit of fear or intimidation regarding his comfort level with social networking.

These funny little guys are filled with catnip, hand sewn using felt, vintage buttons and cleaned, recycled man made (safe) stuffing. I call them my Hawaiian Rain Forest Pets.
Inspired by two of my grandsons who made some and fed them to the wolves...I mean cats, who just loved them!

I also dabble in the visual arts, although I, in no way consider myself an artist. When I draw the idea usually comes to me in my quiet time or while I am trying to go to sleep...and always seems to send a message of comfort or reminds me to keep focused, go forward and to remember to stop and smell the roses, encourage the young ones and listen, genuinely listen to those that are facing the challenges that have come about as our world and economy goes through what I call "the great shift". Of course my "listening" is not limited to this..

I titled this very rough piece "The night of the three moons~Love moon, Acceptance moon and Forgiveness moon.

A reminder to me to always hold true to these values:

Love unconditionally

Accept unconditionally

and

Forgive unconditionally

A huge goal, but a good one!

I hope that just my time spent listening, validating his work and just making friends helped to inspire him a little bit, enough to maybe help him take the next step..as I sensed that he already knew what that was.

What do YOU eat for Breakfast?

I love food! I'm not addicted to it, I just need it to function =)!

And because I do (love food), I have to work hard at making good choices, exercising and being conscious of the amount of food I "enjoy" each day.

I'm a grazer, small portions, more times a day.

The good thing about this is I enjoy eating appetizer or tapas style.

The bad thing is I enjoy eating appetizer or tapas style..LOL!

While I was preparing my papaya for breakfast, I couldn't help opening one of the avocados my friend gave me yesterday...pretty, isn't she?

I decided to make guacamole out of the avocado for later in the day, to use as a spread in my veggie sandwich for lunch.

Cereal just has to be one of my favorite comfort foods!

Nothing like crunching on a bowl of grape nuts while watching a spooky movie!

And of course, I couldn't even put into words what breakfast would be like without JOE!

Fortunately I live in the Hawaiian "coffee belt", okay, I gave this strip of geography that name, but literally I pass two boutique coffee farms and shops on my way into town.

So access to fresh, organic, delicious coffee is right at my doorstep...okay, now I'm sounding like someone who needs a "group". Question: do they serve wine and beer as refreshments at Coffee recovery groups?

Okay, that was in poor taste, obviously I NEED my coffee!

You and Me and a Tropical Thursday

I was always mystified or intrigued would probably be the better word, over the idea of Wordless Wednesdays.

The first time I heard the term, I have to admit, it took me a while to process the idea of a day with no words, yeah, I know that's hard to believe.

Anyway, I decided that I would call today "Tropical Thursday". Of course I don't know what I will call next Thursday, but for today, I'll stick to the tropical theme.

I look forward to walking along these stepping stones in the morning, mainly because that says it isn't raining this morning!

Although I live in Hawaii, my home is located on the slopes of Kilauea at the 2000 foot level. Basically, I am right in the cloud line. You know that movie "A Walk in the Clouds" with Keanu Reeves?

Well, minus the grapes, (and Keanu..darn) that's us.

The steps lead to my favorite new spot in our back yard. I say "new" because I planted the Kukui Nut tree that is now 12' tall and shades the chair, only

2 and a half years ago!

A little past my "favorite place" I found these orchids sitting,

un-potted on a rock in our backyard....in all her glory!

I think she likes being "without pot"

Several examples of the hundreds of varieties of indigenous and native moss and lichen that grow in this wet area.

I've made live wreaths out of them in the past with some really cool results...

although I wouldn't know where to start looking for a picture of them, sorry!

As you would expect there are ferns galore growing wild here, I just love them! Do you see the little fiddle head in the center of this photo?

More towards sea level, about 10 miles down the road from my home is the first of many Papaya farms. We can usually find them priced at 5 pieces for a dollar at our local farmer's markets. Papaya is one of those fruits that you either love or hate, there is no in between.

I personally love them and especially appreciate their health benefits!

Looking up through the leaves of one of our "Chinese" Banana trees. The fruit are smaller than what you would normally find in supermarkets and generally sweeter and less firm. Due to the delicate nature of this type of banana they aren't usually found too far from where they grew.

"Opportunist!"

Sister saw the camera and decided that she would demonstrate her banana tree climbing skills for you.

Of course I had to remind her that I only do stills...no "you tube"!

Don't underestimate the value of Doing Nothing, of just going along, listening to all the things you can't hear, and not bothering.

The Griswalds and Christmas in Hawaii

When I found myself cracking up while watching National Lampoon Christmas Vacation, it occurred to me that I really needed an emotional break!

Because, honestly, it is one of the only movies that I am drawn to, yet repulsed by at the same time. Maybe I am learning to let my hair down, because I was laughing out loud (really!) at one o'clock in the morning!

One of my favorite props were the moose mugs that Chevy Chase (Clark Griswald) and Randy Quaid (cousin Eddie Johnson) were drinking eggnog out of in one of the opening scenes...I want one! Love how Randy Quaid would hold the antlers with his pinkie raised up..too funny!

Mae Questel (Aunt Bethany) was too adorable and hilarious in her role...remember how she wrapped the cat in one of her presents? The cat met her doom when she got fried while chewing on the Christmas tree lights. Don't get me wrong, I love cats as you would know if you read my posts...but I am still laughing at that scene!

(funny I couldn't find any pics of it, probably "reported" to google by some animal hugging group...lol!)

Honestly, I had completely forgotten about this scene where, when dreaming about his new pool, Clark fantasizes about Christmas in Hawaii...

Why they even play a 50s version of Bing Crosby singing "Mele Kalikimaka"!

Celebrating Souls in Paradise

As the holidays approach my personal preference would be to skip past Halloween and go directly to Thanksgiving. However, as I thought about it this year, I had to admit that the "celebration of souls" is something that is practiced quite aggressively by the people of our islands. So much so that I thought it worthy to blog about.

The Volcano Art Center in Volcano, Hawaii on the Big Island of Hawaii is sponsoring

Dia De Los Muertos

Now while this may not be your traditional Hawaiian celebration, the Hawaiian culture as well as many of the early cultures that made Hawaii home have an..I don't know if you would call it affinity, but a very visual and active way of paying homage to those who have passed away.

The Japanese celebrate with the Bon Dance or the Obon season, which traditionally starts at the end of summer or beginning of Autumn. The local Buddhist temples or Hongwanji prepare for the celebration by decorating with paper lanterns, flowers and beautifully colored fabric. Besides the traditional dances there are vendors selling delicious Asian treats and people who don't dance come to visit with friends and catch up on each others lives.

Graveyards are visited quite like city parks.

Families gather around a loved ones grave and have lunch or just visit with one another. This tradition might seem morbid unless you draw near and hear the laughter and good memories being shared. Some families will leave a fruit or drink or other type of food as a love offering to the deceased.

Then there are the controversial road side memorials that are, sadly enough, everywhere.

I don't really like them because just the thought that a person died there is so heart breaking, however, who am I to question the grieving process?

The outdoor circle and other community groups have complained about these memorials over the years, but banning the practice is difficult as it is so much a part of the culture.

Finally there is the most famous Hawaiian memorial of them all, the

USS Arizona at Pear Harbor.

I guess you could say that this is the most visited

"celebration of BRAVE souls"

in Hawaii, possibly in the nation.

Connecting with our past and those that left a legacy or made an impact on our lives is a reminder of one of my favorite philosophies:

It's not what you take with you that matters, it's what you leave behind!

Yes, you guessed it, this is Diners, Drive Inns and Dives Guy Fiere!

My two pretty nieces, Staci and Kehau peddling their wares at a high school graduation. In Hawaii it is traditional to grace the graduates with Leis, Candy, Money, bouquets and other very creative gifts.
These two women have always been very entrepreneurial, they both have regular jobs, one is an airline stewardess and the other an esthetician...but this is how they beat the economy! You go girls!

You might have seen this one going around on facebook, and I just couldn't resist! The title read: this is what an in-bred dog looks like!

These are two of my six grandsons. The one in the diapers turned 13 this past weekend, so of course mom had to do whatever she could to embarrass him on facebook!

Chocolate Hula Girls and Boys!

Did you know that there is only one place where cocoa is grown in the United States? You guessed it, right here in Hawaii. The Big Island of Hawaii, to be specific. In fact the Big Island or the Island of Hawaii is the only place in the world where all the raw ingredients for all three major infusion beverages are grown;

Coffee, tea and cacao.

Our warm, tropical climate make it an ideal location for growing these products.

I could go into detail about what part of the fruit is used to make chocolate and how the extraction process takes place, but I figured that I would focus on featuring the creators themselves, two of my favorite Hawaiian Chocolate companies, their founders and the links to their sites, so that you can see for yourself.

I guess I am, in essence, your Hawaiian tour guide and we are going on a chocolate tour! Yeah baby!

I met Melanie Boudar a few years ago at a fund raising event for the

Volcano Art Center in Volcano Village on the Big Island of Hawaii,
where she was kind enough to donate boxes of her elegantly crafted, delicious chocolate creations.
Melanie is the owner of Sweet Paradise Chocolate located in Hawaii. She is a graduate of Ecole Chocolat in Vancouver, Canada, the Artisan Chocolate and Confection Program at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York and has studied with some of the finest chocolate makers in North America.

There is so much more to say about her art, however I have included the links to her candy site as well as her blog, she and the people that surround her can tell this amazing story best.

I will testify that eating her chocolates is an experience! I don't know how to describe it but to say that the "experience" may start on your tongue, but it ends up in your soul! I am including photos of some of her creations here, however I encourage you to visit her site!

Besides being a Chocolatier, Melanie owns a fantastic Bed and Breakfast and vacation rental in the beautiful Village of Volcano...

Like Melanie, Michael and Joe's chocolates are all hand made using the purist of ingredients without the addition of any preservatives.

also searches out and carefully selects other high quality gourmet brands that they stock in their store.

The island of Oahu, where Honolulu Chocolate Company's stores are located, is the island on which I was born and raised. I now live on the Big Island, where I can get Melanie's treats, however a visit home is never complete without a special treat from Honolulu Chocolate Company.
In fact, once, after picking up a beautiful assortment of their chocolates for a friend, I had to stop at a local gift shop close to her home as the chocolates didn't make it!

Chocolate melts fast in the hot Hawaiian sun...that's my story and I'm sticking to it...LOL!

These times are challenging for so many, I guess you could consider yourself a survivor if you have made it this far. That's what I used to think! However after getting involved with a couple of "teams" of other shop owners on Etsy, I can actually say that with their help, I am actually considering myself more than a survivor, and in fact maybe a conqueror!

A Funny thing Happened to me on the Way to the Post Office!

Going to the local post office has taken on new meaning for me since starting an on line business with Etsy!

I used to loathe even the feeling of those stuffy buildings where security and rules prevail, were ugly furniture is such a contrast against such beautiful architecture!

However, the fact that I was shipping two products, must have had a positive effect on me, because I actually noticed things that I usually just take for granted!

Like this modern mixed with volcanic stone bench that has acquired a mossy patina, looking nice right next to our island style embellished news paper racks.

Or the fact that our county is taking seriously the need to remind people not to dump in our storm drains, especially because Hilo is right at sea level! I love the "Honu" or Hawaiian turtle design. Did you know that this design is an adaptation of ancient Hawaiian petroglyph designs? The line down the center of the Honu's back represents the natural balance of the turtle. Its tough, survivor mentality, coupled with its demure spirit!

Where did these come from? I guess I just wasn't being observant! What a difference a good attitude makes!

And a rubber neck! LOL!

A Hula Harvest Moon!

I went shopping today...virtually, although with these shops I could have visited them in person.

Three friends that have entered my life via etsy and the internet,

how awesome is that?

The Hawaiians of old, my ancestors, referred to the Harvest Season as "Makahiki" it was a time of celebration, goodwill, community and Ohana (family).

No warring or arguments were allowed. All focus was on the harvest and the gods that the Hawaiians believed were behind the blessings of bounty.

As a way to show my appreciation for their support and their "sister hood" I chose to feature them in this virtual shopping trip that I will be linking on one of my etsy Best Team mates web site:

a word, I have to admit, that my grandmother or tutu, as well as my father used to describe me.

Facebook Keeping it Real through Hawaiian Eyes

All facebook "trashing" aside, I love the photos that my friends and family post. So I decided to do a weekly (good intentions) blog featuring my top 5 picks.

This weeks theme "Hawaiian Eyes" a view of life from Hawaii.

There is nothing more heart warming than opening my facebook page in the morning to be greeted by this:

Not that it was good to see my little "Buns" down in the dumps, but it was good for an adjustment in the (my) attitude department!

This post evoked numbers of heartfelt "get well soon" "praying for her" responses, putting validity to the quote from Lilo and Stitch:

"Ohana (family) means no one gets left behind"

Miles away, her Aunt, Kehau who is a fly girl for Hawaiian Airlines posted this picture via instagram. Celebrating a fellow fly sister's birthday! Watching out for each other when they are away from home.

Another birthday celebration (yes, we love to celebrate!) my friend Jorene and her uncle celebrating his 80+ ...don't you just love the T's

"If the fish is sick, change the water!" LOL!

No wonder why he's lived this long and has that SMILE!

In Hawaiian we say Hauoli la hanau

(how-oh-lee lah hah-now) for happy birthday. Loosely translated it means

"to carry happiness".

Let the healing begin!

Being able to set up this hand made shop on etsy Volcano Girl Creations, and to actually show case items that I have made is really a major step in my life.

I have always loved creating whether it was writing, cooking, gardening, drawing, sewing...you get the picture!

It was tough enough growing up in an environment where a career in the arts was always discouraged. However to top it off, spending years as a single mom, the need to have a "steady" income won over the desire to do art. Or at least that's what the world told me!

Perhaps this crazy economy, in some cases, may actually be a catalyst for self discovery and a strengthening of spirit.

I can honestly say that I probably would not have started creating again if not for the nudge this change in lifestyle gave me.

Maybe it was actually more like a push!

My creations are a little primitive and natural and definitely me!

I call these latest my Happy Hawaiian Hippie line!

What is pretty cool is that they are made of shells that I would gather while de-stressing on the beach during my corporate days.

Yes, everything does work for the good!

A Beautiful Hawaiian Weekend at the Volcano Art Center

I feel very privileged to take you on a mini tour through an event supported by the Volcano Art Center, this past weekend, the semi-annual Art Market.

This is a relatively new venue (the artmarket) created as a way for our local, emerging artists to showcase their work and hopefully provide opportunities for sales as well as gallery or wholesale consignments.

Founded in 1974 by a band of eclectic and energetic artists, the Volcano Art Center runs a successful fine arts gallery located in a 100 year old historical building in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Handwoven Lauhala-an ancient Hawaiian and indigenous plant.

The Volcano Art Center's mission is to develop, promote and perpetuate the artistic, cultural and environmental heritage of Hawaii's people through the arts and education. Besides venues such as this Art Market, the center provides on going art, cultural and environmental education opportunities and events.

We are especially proud of our on going efforts to provide these experiences to people who might not otherwise be able to experience art due to economical circumstances.

As I write this I have to admit that I am fearful, yet encouraged by the energy of these creative ones that have such a desire to connect with their peers, improve their business skills and become a part of the movement to build human-scale economies.

If any one group of people can accomplish this, it would be the creative ones who have had to swim upstream, against the norm, even in the good times!

I don't believe there is another business community that so strongly advocates their peers as the art community.

Sitting on the board of the Volcano Art Center has provided me a wonderful opportunity to utilize my administrative, organizational and team building skills to support the creative and innovative "pathways" to success for this art focused non profit as well as for the individual artists.

We have a lot of work ahead of us, however knowing the effect art has on the well being of the planet makes it all worth while!
