Hair Transplant: The Lasting Hair Loss Restoration Method

Hair LossThere is only one permanent method of hair restoration, and that is through a hair transplant. The procedure is done by taking hair from the sides and back of your head and implanted into the bald or balding area.

When Hair Transplant is Right for You

You can undergo hair transplant if you have significant hair loss, at least 23 years of age, medications are ineffective, and you have no contraindications to medical procedures, and other hair loss causes have been ruled out. Likewise, you should have reasonable expectations from the procedure. If you meet the criteria, you may visit hair transplant clinics for assessment and more information.

How Hair Transplant is Done Today

The modern hair transplant procedure is performed using the Follicular Unit Technique. This involves either of two methods to extract hair: Follicular Unit Extraction (or FUE) and STRIP method.

Under the STRIP method, a small strip of skin from the donor area (usually the back of the patient’s head) is taken using a scalpel. The resulting gap in the head is closed by stitching. The patch of skin from the donor area is then separated into small grafts that contain one to three follicles.

On the other hand, FUE is a hair restoration technique that does not require stitches. The hair follicles or roots are extracted from the back of the patient’s head with the aid of special micro-punctures and then implanted in the target area of the head. The patient is under local anaesthesia during the entire procedure. A scalpel is not used to cut the skin, unlike in the STRIP method. Only surgeons perform an FUE hair transplant procedure, and not mere technicians.

Expected Recovery Period

You can expect to heal at a much quicker pace if you undergo an FUE treatment. In fact, you can immediately regain your mobility after the procedure, and go back to your routine within a day, unlike in a STRIP procedure where you need to rest for a minimum of one week.
