Home improvements and remodelling can increase the comfort level and style of your living spaces. The right remodelling choices can also raise the value of your property when you decide to sell.
Before hiring a contractor to do your project, however, do your due diligence in choosing from a list of service providers.
Ask for Suggestions or Referrals
Your friends or relatives may have worked with a contractor. Ask them if they are happy with the work, and if they would refer the contractor to you for the specific project. Some contractors are good at some things and not too good at others, so mention the project. Put the referrals on a short list.
Call the Builders on Your Shortlist
Call the contractors first. By speaking to them on the phone, you can already gauge how knowledgeable they are about the project. Don’t forget to ask for a quote specific to the project from each of the contractors. Ask for a list of past clients that you can call.
Compare the quotes sent to you by the contractors on your list. Look at the most reasonable and not just the cheapest. Call the past clients and ask about the quality of the work. From the answers you get, you may already eliminate the less qualified contractors.
Visit Your Choices
Talk to the contractors left on your list in person. During your meeting, you’ll be able to determine the following:
- Their politeness and enthusiasm
- What they will do about the debris and mess; their dust extraction facilities; the noise
- The extent of their warranty on the work and on the project
- The quality of their materials
- The time and date of work, from beginning to an estimated end
- Protection of your property from scratches and dirt
You have to feel comfortable with the contractor you’re going to work with, and only by meeting them face to face will you be able to determine that.
